Paramedics & Pets
Paramedics who are called to emergencies, and motor vehicle accidents, are confronted, in approximately 20% of cases, by situations where pets are directly involved in the trauma of the accident, or a result of their owners being hospitalized, these pets are left alone, unfed and unwatered in their homes.

Identipet recognises the dedication of a team of 5 highly qualified and experienced Paramedics who work with Gauteng’s emergency services, regularly, and on an entirely volunteer basis. Dealing with injured animals can be just as challenging and emotionally demanding to deal with as human patients and equally hard to calm and treat such animals. For example the injured German shepherd trapped in the back seat, or the Maltese flung from an elderly lady's lap through the smashed window.

The human accident victim is usually more concerned by their pet in the car, or their pet at home, than their own serious injuries, and Paramedic’s role is to deal with the animal issue too.

Recently our paramedics witnessed a beautiful Staffordshire bull terrier being run down by a car. They stopped and tried their best to save the dog’s life. Despite establishing intravenous fluid drips and administering oxygen, the little dog passed away before they were able to transport the animal to a veterinary hospital.

This unpaid volunteer team would like to take part in the World Rescue Organization Vehicle Rescue Competition in the UK in 2008, to learn new and effective methods of rescuing people and animals from motor vehicle accidents, in order to continue their service to the community.

Being a volunteer team they need assistance with kit, equipment and particularly travel expenses. Because Identipet believes that these unsung paramedic heroes need support, we have sponsored a DVD on their work, their training and their dedication.

If you would like a copy of this DVD, and possibly lend your support, please send an e-mail to paramedics@identipet.com and your free DVD will be mailed to you.
Isn’t it comforting to know that such dedication exists?
