A three man climbing group will be setting off on the "Identipet Kilimanjaro Climb" in Tanzania, starting Tuesday 11th March. The climbing group will comprise Grant Finnemore, Wieslaw Scigala and Bruce Finnemore together with two guides and several porters. The route that will be taken is the 8 day Lemosho route through the two saddles of the mountain and up to Uhuru Peak (5,895metres) at the summit, and on the craters rim. "Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain on the Earth's land surface, rising about 4,600 meters (15,000 feet) above the surrounding plain, tall enough to maintain a permanent snow cap despite being just 330 kilometers (210 miles) south of the equator. The volcanic mountain slopes are commonly fertile and support thick forests, while the much drier grasslands of the plains are home to elephants, lions, and other savanna wildlife. Kilimanjaro is a triple volcano (has three peaks) that last erupted perhaps more than 100,000 years ago but still exudes volcanic gases". Identipet is using this opportunity to donate "Microchips for Metres", and will be donating microchips for the total height reached - hopefully the top!! Should all go according to plan, at sunrise on St.Patricks Day, Monday 17th March, the South African flag and the Identipet logo will be prominent enough to announce - "We made it!" Wish us luck! |
