On the run for over 3 years!! Animals are perhaps fortunate in as much as they are able to be permanently identifiable, by means of a microchip, which is often life-saving technology. Such is the case of "Storm" the pedigree Siberian husky, who one day just went for a walk! The story of "Storm" started on the 6th of June 2001, when his owner took him to the Johannesburg SPCA for an Identipet microchip implant. It wasn't too many months later that Storm's distraught owner, Miss du Toit of Brakenhurst, reported him missing. Siberian Huskies, as is well known, have a desire to run and run and run………….. And so it was that the Identipet database entry recorded Storm as "lost, presumed stolen". Storm was lost, but the Identipet database information carried hope that one day he would return. In October 2003, Miss du Toit wrote to Identipet, expressing the emotion that Storm was in all probability lost or had died. On the 19th of December 2003, Stephanie, an inspector at the Alberton SPCA, phoned the Identipet for recovery information regarding a stray husky. Yes, it was Storm. Two and a half years later, after disappearing from home, he was found. His microchip had ensured his identity was never in doubt. Storm had been for his run, and was now back looking for his dish and his basket. Was Storm really lost? Was he found by someone who tried to find his owner, or someone who just assumed ownership? Whatever the case may be, the Identipet microchip and database, coupled with the dedication of the SPCAs brought a happy conclusion to the story of Storm, the Siberian Husky, who one day just went for a walk! |
